Amsterdam to Geneva Our taxi driver got lost lost on the way to Schellingwoude, and we drove for miles on the wrong side of a canal. Could see the hangar across the way, but couldn't get to it. Finally had to go back into town and start over again. Peg Kennard down to see us off.

1130 - Cologne. 4 bridges. Cathedral is very prominent from air.

1143 - Castles and old ruins every 10 miles. For last ten minutes banks have been getting higher. They are now about 200-300 feet higher rising with rather sharp slopes. River about 200 yards wide and does not vary much. Terraces on sides of hills keep them from washing away. Gravel pit with railroad going to river mile away from it now abeam.

1155 - Mountains behind the banks are now about 800 high.

1212 - Heavy river traffic is an index of the wealth of the Rhine valley. There is never a mile that does not have a long side-wheeler tug towing two or three barges up river. On every commanding hilltop, usually at a river bend, is a castle in a state varying from perfect preservation to utter ruin. They are always covered with ivy. Terraces very noticeable. We are flying at 800 feet and some hills are now higher than the plane.

1222 - Mainz. Air has been dark and heavy all the trip - probably smoke out of all the industrial developments along the Rhine. Can see River Main coming into the Rhine from the east, opposite Mains.

1240 - Air is so still that the river makes a perfect mirror for the poplars lining its shores. It makes a lovely peaceful scene. Large farms outside of towns now below. Evidently the farmers live in towns, for the fields are unbroken by dwellings.

1248 - To the left wing tank. Both floats floats are now exhausted. Visibility is now only about three miles in the haze.

1253 - Mannheim. DDF DE KHMZA: STANDORT MAUNHEIM.
