This year's Matson Lecture at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting in Chicago will be delivered by Marion L. "Jack" Walker, MD, at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. Dr. Walker, one of the leading pediatric neurosurgeons in the nation, will discuss Pediatric Neurosurgery: The Establishment of a Subspecialty.

Dr. Walker received his undergraduate education at Brigham Young University and Mississippi College. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1969. An internship in general surgery at Latter-Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City was followed by residency training in general surgery from 1970 to 1971 at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. His neurosurgery residency training from 1971 to 1976 at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix was followed by a 12-month fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.

Dr. Walker established the practice of pediatric neurosurgery in the Intermountain West, and he has been in active practice at the University of Utah and the Primary Children’s Medical Center for the past 32 years. He is currently professor of neurosurgery and adjunct professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah. He is certified by The American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He is currently the chair of the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgical Fellowships. Dr. Walker is the immediate past-chair of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also the immediate past chair of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery and has served as chair of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics. He has previously served as chair of the Pediatric Section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and president of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons.
